ITINERARY

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 7,742ft to 9,498ft
  • Distance: 7 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest

Embark on your journey at Londorossi Gate, the starting point of the Lemosho Route. The trail leads you through the captivating rainforest, where ancient trees tower above, creating a mystical atmosphere. After a few hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, nestled amidst this natural wonder.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 9,498ft to 11,500ft
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Habitat: Heath

Bid farewell to the enchanting rainforest as you ascend into the heath zone. The trail offers glimpses of Kibo Peak, an exhilarating reminder of the heights you'll soon conquer. Arriving at Shira 1 Camp, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 11,500ft to 13,800ft
  • Distance: 16 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Today's journey takes you across the expansive Shira Plateau, a high-altitude desert with scattered shrubs. The surreal scenery creates a feeling of walking on another planet. As you approach Shira 2 Camp, the towering peaks of Kibo and Mount Meru will be your companions.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 13,800ft to 13,044ft
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Descend into the Barranco Valley, surrounded by surreal landscapes and giant lobelias. As you approach Barranco Camp, marvel at the imposing Barranco Wall, a thrilling challenge for the next day.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 13,044ft to 13,106ft
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Tackle the Barranco Wall, an exhilarating scramble that rewards you with stunning views from the top. Continue through undulating terrain to Karanga Camp, nestled beneath the southern face of Kibo.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 13,106ft to 15,331ft
  • Distance: 4 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Ascend to Barafu Camp, your launching point for the summit bid. The landscape transforms into an arctic desert, a stark contrast to the lush rainforest at the beginning of your journey. Rest and prepare for the monumental day ahead.

Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • Elevation (ft): 15,331ft to 19,341ft (and down to 10,065ft)
  • Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
  • Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
  • Habitat: Arctic / Rain Forest

Begin your summit push in the dead of night, guided by the illumination of your headlamp. Reach Stella Point on the crater rim and witness a breathtaking sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak, standing at the roof of Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp through varied terrain, from the barren heights to the lush rainforest below.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • Elevation (ft): 10,065ft to 5,380ft
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Habitat: Rain Forest

Complete your descent through the captivating rainforest, a fitting conclusion to your Kilimanjaro adventure. Arrive at Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your well-earned summit certificates. A vehicle will take you back to Moshi, where you can relish in the triumph of your extraordinary journey.
